Belfast Peace Agreement

On 11 January 2020, on the basis of the New Decade Agreement, the new concept, the executive and the Power-Sharing Assembly, the Executive and the Assembly were reinstated, to the participation of the five main political parties in Northern Ireland. The overall result of these problems was to undermine trade unionists` confidence in the agreement exploited by the anti-DUP agreement, which eventually overtook the pro-agreement Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) in the 2003 general elections. UUP had already resigned from the executive in 2002 following the Stormontgate scandal, in which three men were indicted for intelligence gathering. These charges were eventually dropped in 2005 because persecution was not “in the public interest.” Immediately afterwards, one of Sinn Féin`s members, Denis Donaldson, was unmasked as a British agent. This conference takes the form of regular and frequent meetings between The British and Irish ministers to promote cooperation between the two governments at all levels. On issues not left to Northern Ireland, the Irish government can present views and proposals. All decisions of the Conference are taken by mutual agreement between the two governments and the two governments, in order to make resolute efforts to resolve the differences between them. In addition to the number of signatories[Note 1], Stefan Wolff identified the following similarities and differences between the themes discussed in the two agreements:[28] The two main political parties of the agreement were the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), led by David Trimble, and the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), led by John Hume. The two heads of state and government together won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998. The other parties to the agreement were Sinn Féin, the Alliance Party and the Progressive Unionist Party. The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which later became the largest Unionist party, did not support the agreement.

When Sinn Féin and loyalist parties entered, they left the talks because republican and loyalist paramilitary weapons had not been decommissioned. The region`s political parties still disagree and are deadlocked. Many hope that a peaceful power-sharing agreement can soon be restored. The agreement was for Northern Ireland to be part of the United Kingdom and remain in place until a majority of the population of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland wished otherwise. If this happens, the British and Irish governments will be “obliged” to implement this decision. This is because the Good Friday Agreement has created complex agreements between the various parties. The three areas of action of the pact have created a network of institutions to govern Northern Ireland (Strand One), bring together the heads of state and government in Northern Ireland with those of Ireland (Strand Two or North-South Cooperation) and bring together heads of state and government from across the United Kingdom and Ireland (Beach 3 or East-West).
